How to keep your car spick and span

Maintenance isn't just about having your oil changed every 15,000km or so, it's about small but important details like keeping your car sparkling on the outside and spiffy on the inside.

  • Whenever you clean your windshield, be sure to check your windscreen wiper blades for tears. Don't wait until the rubber on the wiper blade is totally worn our or becomes brittle before you choose to replace them. They are very important because during a heavy downpour, you will need them to be in a good working condition and you should always make sure that the windshield washer fluid reservoir is filled up.

  • Vacuun frequently to remove dirt from the floor carpets and upholstery. You should also dive the floor mat a good shake regularly to get rid of dried mud, leaves or sand that is left behind by your passengers.

  • It is always good to keep stash of tissue paper and wet wipes to clean up dirty spots before carrying out serious cleaning later with the appropriate equipment. If spills and stains should ever occur, be sure to clean them up as soon as possible to prevent the stains from setting into your car's upholstery.

  • If your car is fitted with leather seats, you can use a leather cleaner and conditioner frequently to prevent the leather from cracking. For upholstered seats, you can use the right cleaning foam or shampoo and finish off the cleaning with a protective layer. Check for colourfastness before you begin applying the cleaning solution onto the seats by testing a small patch in an inconspicious area.

  • If you display ornaments on your car's dashboard, do make sure that they are properly secured. You can also keep loose or small items in a secure place like the glove compartment, side pockets and other cubby holes.
